ABMDR youth group shines at ACYOA Weekend in New York
Many eagerly join ranks of ABMDR as potential bone marrow donors
Los Angeles, May 30, 2018 — The Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry’s (ABMDR) New England youth group participated in the ACYOA General Assembly and Sports Weekend, which was held in New York from May 25 through 28.
The highly-anticipated weekend, which celebrated youth leadership and athletic excellence, drew delegates and members of the Armenian Church Youth Organization of America from throughout the East Coast.
During the various events of the weekend, members of the ABMDR New England youth group educated their peers about the life-saving mission of ABMDR, stressing the vital importance of joining the registry’s ranks for a chance “to become an angel and help save someone’s life.” Thanks to the energetic efforts of the ABMDR New England youth group, 20 eager young men and women registered as potential bone marrow stem cell donors.
“It’s so wonderful to see members of our youth group embrace social responsibility and activism; and to see them encourage fellow Armenians to support a cause they deeply believe in,” said Maral Der Torossian, who heads ABMDR’s New England outreach program.
The ACYOA General Assembly and Sports Weekend’s athletic events, during which ABMDR youth-group members introduced their peers to the registry’s work and recruited donors, were held at the CUNY John Jay gymnasium. The youth group had also recruited donors on May 19, during the banquet of the Armenian-American Pharmacists’ Association (AAPA), in Watertown, Massachusetts. The AAPA is a sponsor of ABMDR’s annual walkathon in Watertown.
“Kudos to our young men and women in New England for a fantastic job!” said Dr. Frieda Jordan, president of ABMDR, and added, “We commend our young volunteers’ heartfelt enthusiasm, their truly inspiring dedication to advancing our organization’s life-saving mission across the East Coast.”
